"The Old Kladruby horse is wine from the best horse vineyards, mellowing for the centuries in Czech wine cellar…"
This breed is the only one which have been created for ceremonial purposes of monarchal courts. Old Kladruby horse includes all strenght, robustness, nobility, grace and amazing beauty. Till these days it still keeps its typical baroque appearance.
This horse is robust, warm-blooded with rectangular skeleton, roman nose and big lively eyes. It has high positioned, strong and arched neck, not very visible lychnis, deep and wide chest and proportionately steeper shoulder blade which enables typical high movement action.
Old Kladruby horse reaches adulthood later (reaching the full adulthood around eight year). It is a long- lived viable horse, which is fertile, hard in constitution, durable and able to work till high age. It has great character, balanced nature with lively temperament and is also very hardworking and quick learning.
The quality of the population is continuously checked by capacity testing. The testing is being enapted in two days and the horses have to prove their abilities in the stint as well as in the saddle in them.
The curiosity proving their exceptionality is one story which says that the team of Old Kladruby horses made the journey from Kladruby to Prague and back in one day. The journey was 168 km long.
Originally, the Kladruby horses were breeded in various colour variants. From the end of the eightienth century the preferred types were only the whites and black horses. Till the thirties of the ninetieh century, there was also a flock of brown horses Kladruby breeded, though these ones died out. The whites were used for ceremonial purposes of the court, black horses were used mainly by the church dignitaries.
The white variant of Old Kladruby horse is breeded in Kladruby nad Labem in these tribes: Generale, Generalissimus, Sacramoso, Favory and Rudolfo. Black Kladrubers are bred in Slatiňany ( 35 km from Kladruby) in tribes: Sacramoso, Solo, Siglavi Pakra and Romke. The stud farm was founded there in 1898 as a castle stud farm. In the spaces of the castle, a hipologic muzeum with large collections is placed.
The current usage of Old Kladruby horse varies a lot. These horses are up to the highest standarts of carriage horses and in charioteer races belong to the best ones. The Kladrubian teams of horses usually reach the highest places in the world chart. For example, in the year 2005 (but not only then) they won the world championship. The Kladruber can also be used well as equestrian horses. The usage is wide. From dressage, barouque riding to recreation.
In the year 1993, the Danish queen Margaret II showed interest in 6 whites. After some time, they were joined by two more and they probably were not the last ones. Since 2005 the Old Kladruby horses have also been in constant use of Sweedish court and also by the riding police. And after years these horses are being used as cariage horses in king horse teams again. Old Kladruby horse is our national treasure, but it also is a world unique object from historic as well as from animal husbandry point of view.
Since 2002, the Old Kladruby breeding book is closed for writing in different breeds, because, except the stud NH Kladruby nad Labem, there is enough high-guality pedigree individuals, so the stud is not genetically endangered. The current Old Kladruby horse population is about 1,200 horses. In 1995, the Old Kladruby horse was recognized as a cultural monument.
