The National Stud Kladruby nad Labem

In the thirtienth century, the municipality Kladruby nad Labem used to belong to the monastery of monastic order of Premonstrates from Litomyšl. In 1491 ( a year before the discovery of America ), Vilém from Pernštejn purchased the manor house in Kladruby and grandiosly uplifted it. After Vilém from Pernštejn, the manor house of Kladruby came in possession of Maxmilián II. He was the first to bring the Old Spanish horses to Kladruby around year 1550. In the year 1579 the emperor Rudolf II alloted the Statute of Emperior Court stud farm to this stud farm.

Rudolf II was a big connoisseur and lover of Old Spanish horses. He loved horses because he had been brought up on Spanish court. He continued in the import of Old Italy and Old Spanish horses as well.

Just a year younger then the stud farm of Kladruby is the stud farm of Lipice. Old Kladruby horse is a close relative of Lipizzaner, but with the difference - Kladruber is more massive. Exchange and mutual exploiting of breeding horses between the two stud farms was very common. The founders of two Lipizzan branches - Favory and Maestoso were Old Kladruby studhorses. On the other hand, in the stud farm of Kladruby there were a lot of Lipizzaner horses. The original Old Spanish and Old Italian horses died out in their homeplace because of a little interest. The Kladrubers and Lipizzaners are their last direct living descendants.
